New sketches! I’m trying to illustrate more book covers. I read Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 back in high school. The story is great–incredibly descriptive, thought-provoking, and atmospheric. I wanted to make a more simple cover this time around, so I focused on Guy, the main character, being engulfed by cleansing flames. One of the book’s themes is the notion of rebirth, and the idea of the phoenix is referenced.
To round out my portfolio, I’m going to be creating portraits of newsworthy people, perhaps those who are in current events. This is a portrait of congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the Tuscon, Arizona shooting victim. She was shot in the left side of her brain, but she is miraculously recovering, and even saying a few words. However, I wanted the portrait to convey the strong personality of the congresswoman, while also conveying a sense of unease about her possible future condition. I also referenced her current condition by shading in the left side of her head.
